How US rules impact Sovereignty : lessons from the financial sector
Simon Lelieveldt
Regulatory Consultant for Payments and FintechThe increasing complexity of US sanctions and laws is posing a significant threat to EU enterprises, with unintended consequences such as "accidental Americans" being denied access to services. To insulate themselves from US interference, companies must prioritize risk mitigation measures at the board level. This presentation will explore the implications of US sanctions and laws on EU businesses, and discuss the best practices for ensuring continuity and compliance with EU regulations, such as the DORA requirements.

Data sharing Science
Escape the Hyperscaler trap - stop data sharing
Barend Mons
Professor University LeidenRecent advances in machine learning have raised significant trust-related concerns, including issues like black-box models, hallucinations, and the erosion of scientific credibility through practices like paper mills. ML also poses risks to privacy, security, and legal/ethical standards, such as GDPR and data equitability. Simply having data does not guarantee its reuse, especially when most data fails to meet FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable) principles. Classical data sharing often leads to loss of control, whereas 'data visiting' allows algorithms to access data without moving it, reducing many associated risks. For this to work, data must also be Federated and AI-Ready, with rich metadata enabling machine-actionable use. Finally, immutable logging is essential, particularly when using self-learning or swarm-learning systems.
